Wyldest, the project of London-based artist Zoe Mead, has announced a new album: it’s called Monthly Friend and arrives on May 28 via Hand in Hive. The follow-up to the glistening debut Dream Chaos is said to document Mead’s empowerment as a woman and artists. The first song shared from the record is called “Hollow”, and she says:
“Society and corrupt governments are helpless to the strength of what we collectively will become. I like to think that we’re all just sowing the seeds of what’s to come and it’s a pretty unstoppable thing. I wrote this song about change, something that I believe is the only way the human race can continue to exist, so I’m celebrating it, believing that it’s happening.”
We often associate collective strength and protest with noise and commotion, but Wyldest’s “Hollow” is a gentle and gliding number that seems to coast on the slipstream of altruistic intentions. The slick aerodynamic dreampop sound of “Hollow” leaves plenty of room for Mead to display her doubts, but it gracefully builds with the growing of that inner belief, giving the singer the warm hand she needs to lift her to a place of confidence. By its finale, “Hollow” is a rousing and quietly warm indie anthem.
