Sports return with an addictive, biting sense of fun with “The Look”

Childhood friends Cale Chronister and Christian Theriot have been writing and recording together since their teenage years, and that closeness absolutely shines through in their work as Sports. They also manage to capture that youthfulness in their playful yet flirtatiously combative tone, melding addictive synths with the type of playing that’d have plenty of 70s icons tapping their feet along in approval.

The latest offering from their approaching third album doesn’t break from that musical tradition, with “The Look” proving to be one of their most charming, grooved-out concoctions to date.

Speaking on the track’s playful bite, songwriter, singer and keyboardist Cale Chronister reflects, “‘The Look’ was inspired by a comment a stranger made to me while I was out eating lunch. He interrupted me and asked who my agent was, assuming that I was a model. And then wanted to help represent me. I just kind of laughed because it seemed like such an LA cliche. But he was serious and told me ‘You’ve got the look of the moment.'”

That laugh has essentially been transplanted into musical form, with amusing synths verging on hooting howls blending perfectly with delirious, breathy vocals, offering a confidence booster that we all could no doubt use right about now.

Check “The Look” out below, and stay tuned for Get a Good Look Pt. 1 (bursting with extra material due to the COVID lock down, the band opted for a two part series of albums) come February 12.
