Most bands wouldn’t turn to their fanbase for a new member, but most bands aren’t Gorillaz. Perhaps it’s a bit easier when your band is comprised of cartoon characters, but hey, who cares about technicalities? It’s still cool that band masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett turned to their fanbase for help–they even made a contest for it, inviting legions of fans to submit their artwork. Gorillaz site member jirouta won that contest, and you can check out his original submission below:

Hewlett, the band’s artist, took jirouta’s original drawing and translated it into his own style. This is the Evangelist as you will see him in the band:
