Wicketkeeper jangle through mental fuzz on “Backwards Again”

London/Margate trio Wicketkeeper are releasing a new album called Zambroni next month and today have shared a new single from it called “Backwards Again”. Vocalist Simon Morley says:

“Lyrically it’s probably our most earnest song to date. Life can be overwhelming, and this song is about guiding yourself and your friends through those times when your head doesn’t feel quite right. Musically, I love the space in the song, it’s not something we explored much on the first album, so it sounds quite different comparatively.”

Indeed, the airiness of the production and arrangement gives “Backwards Again” a lightness that carries Morley’s lumpen thoughts and mood in a way that brings levity to it all. There’s a good natured air to the whole affair; his claim to be “trying the best I can” carries weight – you can hear that he’s accepted that life is an uphill struggle and that he’s doing his best to manage it. The song is a lovely jaunt through feelings that we’ve all contended with, and it’s capped off by wonderful sentiments about the friends and support system around him that keep his feet on the ground and chin up.
