Tune-Yards announce new album, share lead single “Limelight”

Tune-Yards have announced the release of their latest album, Better Dreaming, on May 16 via 4AD. Following on the heels of 2021’s Sketchy, partners Merril Garbus and Nate Brenner will once again bring their wonderfully idiosyncratic muses to life through a collection of 11 tracks focused on self-love, physical liberation, and hope for the future.

As an introduction to the new record, they offer “Limelight”, a raucously off-center and groovy pop mutation that was conceived during bouts of dancing involving Garbus, Brenner, and their 3-year-old child (who also sings on the track).

This one almost didn’t make it onto the album because it felt trite,” explains Garbus, “especially given multiple genocides across the globe and the particular impact on children (the kids are not ‘alright’). But it kept coming back as people kept responding positively to it, in particular our own kid. Who am I to talk about getting free, about us all getting free? Fannie Lou Hamer said, “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free” and it feels vulnerable but important to see myself as part of that ‘everybody’.
