Track Review: James Blake – “Order” / “Pan”

[Hemlock; 2011]

James Blake hit the big time with his hit “Limit To Your Love,” which incidentally isn’t even his own song but a cover of Canadian singer-songwriter Feist. He stated that his eponymous debut album was just the start of his musical experimentation, which may be a possible reason as to why he has taken a direction which is reminiscent of his earlier releases with his new offering “Order” b/w “Pan.”

As suggested on YouTube, playing the songs at the same time makes “Order”/”Pan” sound like one cleverly-layered song and you almost wonder why he didn’t think to combine the two in the first place. Without James Blake’s soulful vocals that we’ve all come to love, this could be inaccessible to those not familiar with sub-bass culture. “Order”/”Pan” is on the fine line between structured chaos and a desolate wasteland disguised by pounding beats and hissing snares. As an artist, changing sound can be very important but there’s a fear that James Blake will be alienating all the fans he picked up just before his album was released.
