In a time where artistically credible R&B is experiencing something of a resurgence, Tom Krell is defending sonic turf that no one else is even coming near. The first track from his sophomore effort Total Loss was released in May, and while “Ocean Floor for Everything” was thoroughly agreeable, it screamed “business as usual.” Now there’s take two: “Cold Nites,” and not only does it blow its predecessor out of the water, it’s the most technically accomplished piece of music ever released under the How to Dress Well name.
For anyone who found Love Remains somewhat impenetrable, the newfound clarity of “Cold Nites” should provide a number of entry points. Krell’s voice still cuts like an icy gust of air, and there are bedroom-quality layers of static lurking below, but the brokenhearted piano and harpsichord phrases have been given the hi-fi treatment. It ups the accessibility and the emotional payoff considerably. If you haven’t been moved in some way by the time the eddying drum machine makes its entrance, check your vitals.
Off of Total Loss, due out Sept 17 (World)/18 (North America) on Weird World/Acéphale. Listen to the first single, “Ocean Floor For Everything” here.
