Austra’s new track, “Identity,” is somber, but less so than the Canadian outfit’s typical brand of goth tinged electro. Perhaps this is why it exists as a B-side to “Spellwork,” the trio’s latest single release off the much celebrated Feel it Break.
“Identity” opens with lightly pulsing beats followed by layered vocals that serve to build immediate intensity. Katie Stelmanis’ determined ghostly warble creates a dark space, weaving in the eerie drama that is typically inherent to Austra’s sound. Interludes packed with plinky resonating synth provide softening balance. A touch of lightness and soaring palpitating vocals arrive with the chorus, leveraging the track into pop territory.
All in all, these tiers of floaty and moody meld to prove “Identity” worthy of the buzz that got Feel it Break nominated for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize.
