From an early age, Christina Courtin was obsessed with music. She grew up playing the violin but branched out as she got older and began writing and singing her own material. Word soon got around in New York City that she was a go-to session player for those artists in need of a certain string fix. Playing with artists like Sufjan Stevens, The Dirty Projectors, and Iron and Wine, Courtin had no lack of musical collaborators. Her self-titled debut album was released on Nonesuch Records in 2009 and things began to fall into place very quickly. Her notable contributions to these albums didn’t go unnoticed, and for her sophomore album Varsity, she fell in with the likes of Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail of Dead, White Rabbits) and Ryan Scott for the production side of things. Letting her music and words speak for themselves, the music on Varsity is simple and elegant and always defers to Courtin’s gently persuasive personality.
For “Lightfighter,” the newest song to be released from Varsity, which is due out March 5th on Hundred Pockets Records, Courtin’s gently plucked violin and delicate voice drifts over the ebb and flow of sporadic percussion and ethereal background vocals. The song has an elegiac feel that is bolstered by its honest simplicity and deeply felt emotional resonance.
