The Weather Station‘s new album, Humanhood, is due out this Friday on Fat Possum. We’ve already glimpsed its radiant orchestrations through previous singles “Neon Signs“, “Window“, and “Body Moves“, and now, on the cusp of its arrival, band architect Tamara Lindeman releases its last single, “Mirror”. Bits and pieces of clattering percussion compete with dramatic piano flourishes which eventually melt into wobbly synths and brassy accoutrements.
Straightforward and persuasive, her voice highlights the openness of her composition, the atmospheric expanse that surround her at all times. It’s the sound of an artist pushing their limits and discovering new fields of experimentation when they add just a touch of light in the darkest corners. Her vision continues to grow ever wider, enveloping everything around her, bringing together countless genres before blurring their boundaries and obliterating any expectations of how she might allow these sounds to evolve.
“I wanted the song to warp and disintegrate,” explains Lindeman, “to come in and out of being like the imaginary scaffold that holds up a fantasy or cognitive dissonance. In the end, the band grows garbled and comes apart, giving way to a suspension of synth and string textures. I wanted it to feel like being bathed in light; maybe the light I was talking about in the song.“
