The Lazy Eyes invite us to their mysterious utopia on the psych jam “This Island”

Australian upstarts The Lazy Eyes cheekily revealed earlier this week that their highly anticipated EP2 is going to drop at short notice: tomorrow, to be precise, which is pretty much right now, considering how far ahead they are. Along with that drop, they’ve shared a final single and video from it called “This Island”, saying:

‘The Island’ was written about a place where none of The Lazy Eyes band members have been in real life, and acts as the sequel to ‘The Seaside’ from EP1. It’s an imaginary island that is a sort of utopia but is also filled with mystery... a song that while listening, you can close your eyes to and let your imagination create imagery.”

Leaning hard into the kind of pop-psych that has served their countrymen Tame Impala very well, The Lazy Eyes are firing on all cylinders and making their own mark with “This Island”. The mystery is captured in the lyricism, which begins with them watching a figure from afar, and soon spirals into their reflections of the caves, mountains and snow of “This Island”. Their rugged rhythm matches the varying terrain of their secret hideout, while the balmy atmosphere is palpable in the kaleidoscopic guitar. “Can I show you all the places you can go on this island that I know?” they offer, and it’s practically impossible to resist. Just when you think it’s all sunshine and cocktails, The Lazy Eyes pull a fast one, shifting into a dark chugging descent into the sinister depths held in the island’s core – a hair raising finale.

All of this is reflected perfectly in the video for “This Island”, which you can watch below. Otherwise find it and the rest of EP2 on streaming platforms.
