Today, the Gorillaz have released episode three of its Song Machine series, titled “Aries”.
With the help of one of the most iconic bass players, the Gorillaz continue its longest stretch of intriguing songwriting since its fantastic 2010 record, Plastic Beach. Delectable new wave to its core, Peter Hook’s bass—in typical Peter Hook fashion—thrives as the emotive backbone of “Aries”, harkening to the golden era of New Order, while virtual frontman 2-D (Damon Albarn) goes on a road trip, daydreaming of feeling high in a voice most whimsical. Regarding the track title’s origins, virtual guitarist Noodle says:
“Highly impatient and competitive, many Aries have the fighting spirit of your mythological ruler.”
In addition to Hook’s distinguishable contributions, UK synth maestro Georgia also lends a helping hand in making “Aries” a beautiful synth-pop odyssey, ala Plastic Beach-era Gorillaz. The third installment of the virtual band’s audio-visual project follows “Desolé” ft. Fatoumata Diawara and “Momentary Bliss” ft. Slowthai and Slaves. With these three, uniquely charming singles, Albarn is rekindling the promise that made had his Gorillaz project so attractive, to begin with.
