The Dodos’ 2011 album No Color was one of their strongest to date and left us with the feeling that despite the fact that they’re a mere duo, they could produce all sorts of different styles with their abilities. We’ll find out what they’ve produced in the last couple of years when they return with their fifth album Carrier on August 27th. The album will be their first for Polyvinyl.
The Dodos usually have some level of overhaul in their sound between albums, and it’s unsurprising that singer Meric Long has said that they wanted to start from scratch when it came to writing and recording for Carrier. This time around Long decided to write the words before the music – and when it came time to add guitars he went straight and solely for the electric.
This change of writing can be heard in the first cut made available from the album, “Confidence.” Starting slow and relatively spare, the music seemingly follows Long’s command as part way through the song he sings “don’t slow down” and the song bursts into energetic life, the electricity of the guitar sparkling throughout.
