You may already be a Sunshine Boysclub fan without even knowing it: the project is the moniker the solo project of Youngblood Hawke’s frontperson Sam Martin. He brings that same indie pop confidence to his own music, albeit with an undeniably new flavor.
To arrive at that very sound, Martin turned a tiny shack in the hills of suburban L.A. into a makeshift studio (which he lovingly refers to as “The Hut”), mastering production on his lonesome, writing song of after song, gradually numbering in the hundreds, honing a sound that a press release declares, “melody driven, genre-bending pop that embodies the duality of our inner thoughts, at times both light and dark,” all in preparation for the birth of Sunshine Boysclub.
At last, he’s just released his debut single for the new project, “Patience”, along with a video directed by none other than SASAMI and Katy Perry collaborator Kate Hollowell.
Speaking on his first foray into solo waters, Martin shares, “‘Patience’ serves as a reminder of where I’ve been. I wrote Patience from a positive and healthy vantage point, reflecting back on my journey with depression. When you’re low, you feel like you’ll be stuck that way forever. The world just seems to lose a bit of its magic. But that’s just not the case. The clouds always pass. ‘Patience’ was written as a reminder to myself that if I ever ended up in that place again, it will surely pass. This song is about enjoying both the highs and lows and making each of those journeys useful. Sometimes you have to crawl around in the dark for a while to come up with light. I have to be grateful for all of it because it’s trying to teach me something about myself.“
