Spirit of the Beehive deliver the disorienting double-header “SOMETHING’S ENDING” and “I’VE BEEN EVIL”

Weirdo warped pop masters Spirit Of The Beehive have a new album called YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING on the horizon and this week they’ve shared two new tracks from it “SOMETHING’S ENDING” and “I’VE BEEN EVIL”.

The songs form two parts of a spine-tingling whole. “SOMETHING’S ENDING” is a glacially floating song that is disturbing despite its relative calmness. Zack Schwartz whispers unsettlingly about a dead body being pulled out of a river, while the glacial synth backing gets stamped all over by spewing fuzz and lightly hammering beats.

This then slips smoothly into “I’VE BEEN EVIL” a charging guitar jam that veers between the tension of self-assessment and a yawning black hole of depression and fear that the trio renders so well with their layered sonic approach. The tracks leave so much to be interpreted, both in their lyricism and their sonics – which is always the fun with Spirit Of The Beehive, and why it’s so easy to get hooked into returning to their work time and again.

The pair of songs come with a combined video directed by Kelsea Dakota Larson and filmed in rural Appalachia. Larson says: “My collaborator and spouse Jim and I have been waiting for the right project to film here in rural Appalachia since we moved a few years ago, when we heard these new tracks, we knew this was the right one. We took the titles literally, and wanted to highlight the darkness that can be right under your nose in a beautiful little mountain town, or anywhere really, while outsiders carry on.”

Spirit Of The Beehive’s new album YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING arrives on August 23 through Saddle Creek (pre-order/save). You can find the band on Instagram and Twitter.
