SPELLLING (aka musician Chrystia Cabral) will release her new album, Portrait of My Heart, on March 28. Known for her avant-pop impulses and craggy minimalism, Cabral has long mined the outer boundaries of pop and indie rock to further the realization of her own musical perspective. And with the release of her latest record, she seeks to instill a sense of emotional candidness in her work, a feeling of raw nerve electricity.
“When the lyrics for the title track came together, it really started to morph everything in this more energetic direction, instead of this more whimsical landscape that I’ve worked with before. It started to become more driven, higher energy, more focused,” Cabral explains. “And I have a big affection for it because of that. I love that it feels like it withstood transformation, which is something I always want to aspire to with things that I make. I want them to have this sense of timelessness. It could exist like this, or like that, or like this, but this is the one for right now.”
And to get us acclimated to this new world, she’s shared the title track today, a bounding cosmic rock anthem that mixes brash individuality and opaque orchestrations into a swirling sonic headspace. It’s a more direct expression of her inner narrative, of the stories she tells to herself and the feelings that inspire these internal soliloquys.
The song comes with an accompanying video directed by Ambar Navarro, which deals with the dangers inherent to the creation of art, of the lines carefully threaded so that its influence doesn’t consume the artist.
