Singer/songwriter Michael Ekow and producer May have joined forces to pen a handful of hypnotic genre-blending jams together. The latest of which is the gloomy, atmospheric “SOLO”, which shrewdly combines modern R&B with 80s new wave stylistics. It’s an understatedly gorgeous song that feels tailor-made for solitary nighttime drives to nowhere in particular.
According to Ekow, the track was inspired by the disconnect he feels towards Western egocentric culture.
“Individualism, as an alien concept which affords for individuals to perceive themselves as their own God,” he says. “This also trickles down into the love that can be extended into platonic relationships. One watches others venture down paths which could be detrimental to them, yet unable to voice concern because one does not reserve that as a right. This led me to want to isolate myself and reflect on whether I should conform to the norm or stand on my own beliefs. I found comfort in my convictions of unity with the community. Nevertheless, this required me to understand I don’t want to follow the status quo, even if that means being isolated.”
