Mexican singer-songwriter Silvana Estrada is releasing her new albumVendrán Suaves Lluvias in a month and has today shared a new single from it called “Good Luck, Good Night”.
About the song, she reveals: “This is a song born out of pain, and above all, out of humor, as a way to cope with it. It’s a delirium, and at the same time, an act of letting go. A heartbreak song in every sense. It was the last song I wrote for the album, and in many ways, it marks the end of a friendship. The truth is, even if it’s hard to admit, not all stories end well. Not all of them come with neat little morals or a light behind every goodbye. Some people, and some breakups—are just dark, no matter how you look at them. And it’s exactly in that darkness that humor shows up, like a guard dog, keeping you company.”
Estrada is naturally gifted with an ability to use her voice to dramatic effect, and that is perfectly exemplified on this track. “Good Luck, Good Night” starts in a dark, quiet place, with atmospheric percussion and upright bass accentuating the tribulations she’s singing about. The song gradually builds as her vocal becomes more expressive and before too long we hit the “delirium” she describes, with her voice still wracked with pain but simultaneously breaking through that hurt and becoming something beautiful. While many would go fully unhinged in a moment like this, she masterfully controls the emotion on the line between madness and distress, with the stunning arrangement emboldening it all – flowery melodies to one side, wallowing frequencies below. It comes together to paint a picture of a specific clash of emotions that is stunning to behold.
