Prewn announces new album, shares lead single “System”

Under the mantle of Prewn, Los Angeles-based musician Izzy Hagerup makes music which so thoroughly lays bare the contours of her heart that it feels almost inappropriate to be in the same room while it plays. This was especially evident in the gravitational markers of her 2023 debut album, Through the Window, and now we are given a further glimpse into the intimate mechanisms of her body and mind on her upcoming sophomore record, System

This new album comes from a much more self-centered place, the stagnant aftermath of intensity and emotion,” Hagerup says. “I think it came from a period of time that was more numb, hollow, and confused. More disassociated from heartfelt pain, more entrenched in a frustrating and aimless discomfort.”

Lead single and title track “System” is a perfect vehicle for Hagerup’s spine-tingling voice, equal parts Adrienne Lenker and Jessica Pratt. Echoes of loping strings open the scene only to be replaced by sharply drawn guitar and tambourine a few minutes in, building to an emotional release that hits like a colossal tidal wave.

When I wrote ‘System’ I was supposed to be present and alive and gracious and happy,” she explains. “But somehow I couldn’t escape my own internal fears and depression that can follow me wherever I go.
