Olivia’s World document the decline of love on “Sourgum”

“Sourgum” wastes no time presenting a formidable wall of ecstatic and roughed-up guitar riffs, propping it up against a chugging percussive foundation; and it’s our job to break through to find out what’s on the other side. The latest single from Australian dolewave specialists Olivia’s World comes as a surprise for those who’ve waited patiently for any whisper since the band shared their self-titled debut EP almost five years ago. Rest assured that the fire is still alive, and the band — led by singer-guitarist Alice Rezende and featuring the recent addition of drummer Canberrans Daan Steffens and singer-guitarist Jordan Rodger – are ready once again to plunge into the grungy depths of their collective subconscious.

The track follows the dissolution of affection, as we watch the gradual distance grow between two formerly entwined hearts. Laced with an acerbic wit and the emergence of true regret, it buzzes and thrashes against the loss of love but finds resolve in looking back at the heartache it caused. The ending is a sax-led rave-up(down) that crashes and stomps all around, a chaotic release of energy and the loosening of withered emotional attachments.

I hadn’t picked up the guitar in a while, and it was written in the space of 30 minutes,” Rezende says regarding the new single. “It was also the first song we wrote under the new Olivia’s World lineup. As we had a new and very powerful drummer, it became a pretty potent live song.

“Sourgum” is only the first noisy report from their debut LP, Greedy & gorgeous, and we can be sure to hear more in the lead-up to its release on March 14.
