Nilüfer Yanya invites the pain in through “Method Actor”, announces new album

Nilüfer Yanya will release a new album called My Method Actor on September 13 through Ninja Tune. She shared “Like I say (I runaway)” from the album back in April and has now shared the semi-title track “Method Actor”. She says:

“I was researching method acting – and from what I read, it’s based on finding this one memory in your life, a life-altering, life-changing memory. The reason why some people find method acting traumatic and maybe not safe mentally, is because you’re always going back to that moment. It can be good or bad but you’re always feeding off the energy, something that’s defined you – and that’s what helps you become the character. It’s a bit like being a musician. When you’re performing, you’re still trying to invoke the energy and emotion of when you first wrote it, in that moment. It definitely feels like you’re having to recreate or step into that headspace.”

A display of the dexterity that has grown as her songwriting has matured, “Method Actor” finds Yanya harnessing exciting dynamic interplay between the rhythmic and melodic elements to create a distinctly modern pop rock song. Above it all is her signature voice, gasping and charging over the tricky instrumentation, with her emotional read out being just as unpredictable. She flits from confident to wounded, determined yet dreamy – like she’s stepping in and out of moments from her past and back into her present. Try to keep up.
