If you happen to be reading this on May 26th, today, Todd Haynes will be surveying Louisville’s Palace Theatre, the venue for his live concert film with My Morning Jacket where they will perform songs from their new album, Circuital. The concert will premiere May 31 on YouTube, and will coincide with the album’s release.
The filmed concert is part of American Express’s Unstaged series, which has paired artistics such as Terry Gilliam and the Arcade Fire.
“Circuital has a really declarative, anthemic sound and spirit,” said Haynes. “And it feels to me like a new dawn, a new baptism, a return to the start.
In addition to new material from MMJ, the concert will feature performances from Erykah Badu and Rachel Dratch, who is better known for her SNL performances than anything else.
“Louisville’s an interesting place because there’s not a forced identity,” Hallahan, a childhood friend of James’s who joined the band in 2002. “It’s not really Southern, it’s not really Northern, we’re not really in the Midwest, we’re not really on the East Coast. There’s no expectations. We can kind of be whatever we want to be, and I think that characteristic comes through in this band. We’re not just one way, ever.”
