Matt Fang Xiao Feldman is something of a precocious talent. Despite being too young to enter many of the venues in his hometown, FX has already supervised the music for MTV’s Skins and founded Strongbros, a growing collective of Manhattan-based producers, rappers and DJs with a wealth of material online. In amongst all that, he’s been readying his debut album – on which he plays all parts – while also keeping an eye out for a band to help him take the songs live.
Tentatively scheduled for a July release, it’s a record described by FX as “rooftop music.” The colourful cover art was taken from on top of his own building in Greenwich Village, and points to an assortment of laid back roof parties with a vibrant tropical touch. A heady mix of some far-flung influences, this first cut fits such an aesthetic perfectly.
“Breezy” (feat. Zoe Penina) extols good vibes at every turn; steel drum synths soften a mechanical, clicking beat while ice-chilled lyrics evoke bygone times. The mantra “we can live the easy life, and we can share the easy life” concisely encapsulates what is a summer anthem through and through. Swirling around into a hazy crescendo, it’s over all too quickly and on this evidence the forthcoming album could reach far further than the Greenwich Village rooftops.
