Melancholy Ray evoke a summer that never was on “Cassette” (BPM Premiere)

Leeds-based quintet Melancholy Ray turned heads with the release of their debut single “New Routine” back in June, and things are definitely starting to pick up pace for them, now that they’ve made their mark. They’ve been hard at work on new material that’s set to serve as a proper introduction to their stylish garage rock sound.

Having shared stages with the likes of Van Houten, they’re part of a scene that also includes Far Caspian and Eades; and indeed, the new batch of songs features the latter band’s Dan Clifford-Smith lending a helping hand to Melancholy Ray’s own Aaron Bentley, who was behind the boards. The band are offering up the first real taste of the new collection in the form of “Cassette” today, which we’re pleased to be premiering on Beats Per Minute.

Conjuring up a breezy and undeniably summery atmosphere, don’t be surprised if listening to it has you pining for a summer that never happened.

So say the band: “‘Cassette’ is a bittersweet love song that takes a reflective look back on the summer, whilst embracing the cycles of change that’ll return next year. It’ll make you long for the sun and normality.

Tune in below, and keep an ear out for Melancholy Ray’s debut EP, due early next year.
