Does Caroline Polachek have a sibling we don’t know about? Sure sounds that way on Mae Deline’s new single “Black Hole.”
The LA-based artist definitely has Polachek’s gift for brilliant, sinuous melodies and soul-penetrating lyrics. Plus she can probably earn a degree in astrophysics with lines like “I’ve got a black hole, black hole for a heart / It’s gonna swallow you whole, tear us apart.”
Deline’s career got sidetracked by Covid and a family illness, but she has an ambitious slate of 11 singles planned for the remainder of this year. Her pre-Covid work included the hilarious, punky “Wedding Cake” and a rabbit-filled video for a song called “Multiply” that has one of the most danceable choruses of this decade. She also released “Graffiti”, a haunting song about how men often scrawl a “you-need-fixing” message on the walls of a toxic relationship.
Mae Deline grew up listening to Jewel, Kate Bush and Laurie Anderson – and she could be on track to reach the heights those artists achieved.
