Lucy Dacus announces new album, offers a glimpse with new songs “Limerence” and “Ankles”

Lucy Dacus has announced the release of her fourth studio album, Forever is a Feeling, due out March 28 via Geffen Records. It marks the first new music from her since the release of the GRAMMY-award winning boygenius album, The Record, back in 2023. The new collection features collaborations with Hozier, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Blake Mills, Bartees Strange, Madison Cunningham, Collin Pastore, Jake Finch and Melina Duterte.

Written between 2022 and 2024, the new tracks speak explicitly of love and affection, of sexual agency and desire — though the inspiration for the music sometimes came at a steep price. “I got kicked in the head with emotions,” says Dacus. “Falling in love, falling out of love…You have to destroy things in order to create things. And I did destroy a really beautiful life.

The album’s cover speak to the concept of impermanence and transitory connections, as acclaimed visual artist Will St. John has painted Dacus with the title tattooed across her bare chest. These inked statements only last for as long the bodies can support them, and this plays into her perspective on the idea that this feeling of “forever” is often only temporary, a whirlwind of emotional volatility that speaks to our desire for partnership. “You can’t actually capture forever,” Dacus says. “But I think we feel forever in moments. I don’t know how much time I’ve spent in forever, but I know I’ve visited.

We’re given a glimpse into the recesses of the album’s (and Dacus’) psyche with two new songs: “Limerence” and “Ankles”. While “Ankles” is matter-of-fact in its Baroque desire for sexual freedom and pleasure, “Limerence” is a piano-led wisp of fragile orchestrations and everyday observations, the kind of mundane-made-extraordinary narratives at which she excels. If these two tracks are any indication, Forever is a Feeling may rank among her best works, whether that’s her solo releases or those alongside her boygenius brethren.
