Throughout pop history there have been special singers who could “sell” a song and get you emotionally hooked from the get-go. Many of them we hail by their first names only: Barbra, Whitney, Sabrina, etc. It’s time to add “Liv” to that list because Liv DeToma is one of the best singers in all of pop today. Her debut EP This Is Half A Lie is astonishing, especially the imaginative and emotional song “Aston Martin.”
The song also showcases DeToma’s superb songwriting skills. The automotive metaphor is fresh and intriguing, and Liv goes from zero to sixty on the kickass chorus.
Says DeToma: “I wanted to add something in your face to the end of the EP – something that had a lot of imagery and told an exaggerated version of the frustrations I have experienced in different relationships. ‘I’ll take a ride in your Aston Martin, I’m gonna drive it to Mexico’ was the first line I wrote down, partially as an homage to the song ‘Down in Mexico’ by The Coasters, which was used in a slinky scene in Death Proof (Dir. Quentin Tarantino) where Butterfly gives Stuntman Mike a lap dance in that seedy Texas bar that takes place before he begins his gas-fueled killing spree.”
When Liv hits the final chorus of this song, it’s like Sean Connery hitting the ejector button on his Aston Martin to rid the car of rivals. Liv is in the driver’s seat and she’s saying adios to the million bedroom popsters who can’t match her vocal prowess. “Aston Martin” is like a Bond martini – shaken, not stirred.
