The Weeknd recently announced that he’d be following up his successful mixtape debut House of Balloons with two others, Thursdays and Echoes of Silence, before the year is out. Not long after this announcement was made, six unfamiliar tracks surfaced, igniting rumors that these might be leaks from one (or both) of the new tapes. Come to find out, these new songs are actually old songs.
The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, took to his Twitter page and debunked those theories that these expectedly sexy, syrupy tracks were apart of either of his new mixtapes. Turns out, they were actually recorded by Tesfaye a couple years ago with assistance from a production team called The Noise. One of the cuts, called “Birthday Suit,” was recorded as a demo for Drake, a collaborator and supporter of Tesfaye’s. If you’ll recall, it was Drake’s endorsement that helped give The Weeknd a surge in popularity.
