On the title track to Kurt Vile and Sore Eros’ upcoming EP, Jamaica Plain (out November 4th via Care in the Community Recordings), you get a sense that the duo wanted to revert back to the analog heyday of their musical heroes rather than trying to accentuate some modern idea of indie rock. Â From their digital-free recording process to the gently finger-plucked melody that opens the song, “Jamaica Plain” is looking back in all the right directions. Â And though the song never rushes through its billowing rhythms (it’s an extended instrumental track, after all), there isn’t a sense of complacency either. Â As the song unfolds you begin to understand that both Vile and ex-Violators member Robert Robinson (aka Sore Eros) know exactly where they’re going to end up, but that they’re not in any particular hurry to get there. Â And if they happen to come across acres of glistening guitar notes, Korg flourishes, and a not terribly incongruous drum machine, then that’s just fine too. Â Listen to “Jamaica Plain” below.
