Lena Hessels bares her tranquil side on crystalline stunner “My Baby’s Belly”

Lena Hessels has made major strides with her EP if not now, the first of three separate releases that will coalesce into a bigger full-length. The Dutch artist enters the next phase with the gorgeous, wide-eyed “my baby’s belly”, her first attempt of writing a love song. The song’s aqueous arrangements and glistened strings (by OHMME’s Macie Stewart) who plays in are delightfully reminiscent of late nineties/early zeroes electronic pop staples such as Air, Zero 7, Imogen Heap and Massive Attack.

Hessels on “my baby’s belly” “It felt very nice, it’s like hopping through a meadow. I’m safe now, I’m home. This is the first time I have intentionally written a love song, before I always felt uncomfortable writing about love.” The song narrates the intricacies of intimacy and romance in a sweet, inquisitive fashion, not unlike Björk’s 2001 masterpiece Vespertine.

It’s the perfect soundtrack to those early-spring jitters, when you allow yourself to briefly dip into that child-like eternal bliss. Furthermore, it offers another big sonic progression in Hessels’ craft.
