La Fonda are a five-member band from Seattle, and you can definitely hear echoes of Kurt’s “Teen Spirit” on “Kaleidoscope”, the fantastic single from their new album We Are Infinite, which is out today.
In the nearly three decades since Cobain’s passing, Seattle has become ultra-corporate and too expensive for young artists – and La Fonda explore that topic and many more in this 10-song collection.
Fronted by Filipino-American sisters Valerie and Veronica Topacio, La Fonda transcend all the easy labels like shoegaze and dream-pop. Their song “New Mexico” has a shimmering chorus that stays with you all day. (Full disclosure: one of the many reasons I love this album is that I got married at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico!)
In 2019, the Topacio sisters founded Belltown Bloom, a femme and LGBTQ+-based music festival in Seattle. This year’s event on May 5 and 6 will be headlined by Pussy Riot, Mannequin Pussy, Thunderpussy and numerous bands with non-anatomical names like La Fonda and Ayleen Valentine.
Somewhere Kurt C. is smiling because La Fonda’s great new album is a bold bid to restore Seattle to its rightful place as the epicenter of indie pop.
