Who would have thought that Kid Cudi and Eminem would ever link up? It didn’t seem the most likely pairing, but – arguably thanks to Lil Wayne – we now have a fiery collaboration between the two.
A few months ago, Kid Cudi Tweeted, “Rap God. Help!” at Eminem, but the notoriously social media averse icon was apparently unaware of the plea until he guested on Lil Wayne’s talk show, when the host brought it up, he pledged to reach out.
Well, now here we are, with “The Adventures of Moon Man & Slim Shady”. Cudi uses the link up to get back to rapping, rather than crooning and humming (which, frankly, is a bit missed here), and Eminem arrives with a laid back (for him, anyway) flow, that nonetheless packs power: it’s very much of the moment, addressing COVID-19, those that refuse to wear masks (“I just used the same basket as you shopping / Now I’m in a fuckin’ casket from you coughin'”), police violence, as well as George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery. It’s the most potent and grounded Mathers has sounded in quite some time.
