Jane Inc. is the solo project of Toronto-based musician Carlyn Bezic, and she’ll release her new album, A RUPTURE A CANTON A BIRTH, on October 17. The record is a treatise on resilience, mortality, and the fragility that informs every second of our lives.
It was inspired — or rather, was willed into existence — by an experience she had in April of 2023 in Massachusetts as she waited on the side of the road for a tow truck to come and carry her broken-down tour bus to the nearest mechanic. A semi-truck slammed into her van while she and five other musicians were waiting inside. No one was killed, but the incident provided a clarity which moved Bezic to upend her life, breaking off a longstanding relationship and finally seeing a doctor for a recurrent vocal issue (which turned out to be stage one cancer on her left vocal cord). She came out of all of this with a renewed sense that renewal and regrowth was possible even under the most dire circumstances. And so she began working with producer Edwin de Goeij (U.S. Girls, Martha Wainwright)on some songs which would form the foundation of her upcoming album.
The result is a wide-eyed cinematic synth-pop record that aims for something beyond the superficial oscillations the genre often provides, digging deep into the emotional recesses that Bezic sought to explore in the wake of that awful experience. On her latest single, the elastic and propulsive “freefall”, she embraces the chaotic spirals of her pop impulses and delivers a kaleidoscopic homage to her influences while also expanding the genre’s boundaries. There’s a freedom of movement built into the track, a feeling of reckless abandon that informs its hypnotic melodies and cyclical rhythms. She’s not being restrained by anything, whether it’s external or internal — she welcomes this release and sits comfortably at its epicenter.
“We’re moving down a road at different speeds,” explains Bezic. “Sometimes on that journey we encounter an unavoidable chasm. In this song I choose to run toward it, embrace it, and let the canyon swallow me whole, because it’s the only way through.“
