As previously reported, rumors began last week that Bloc Party might move on without frontman Kele Okereke when Kele told NME that he feared he might have been fired from the band. Then today guitarist Russell Lissack confirmed that Bloc Party would be auditioning new singers for the band, stating:
It’s not really a secret because Kele’s been pretty busy doing solo stuff and it looks like he’s going to be doing that a bit longer. The other three of us wanted to meet up and make music. We were talking about just doing an instrumental thing, but now we might get a singer as well, to properly put some music out and play some shows.
End of story, right? Well, no.
As Pitchfork points out, Bloc Party have just posted on their official website the message that “Bloc Party is still Bloc Party” and “see you soon,” along with the above Simpsons-inspired cartoon featuring the band with Kele included.
What does this all mean? Well, simply interpreting the quotes could indicate that the members of Bloc Party could be working on another project without Kele while he pursues his solo stuff, or that maybe the band reconciled sometime in the past day or so. Regardless, the current status of Bloc Party seems to be that the band is still intact. We’ll keep you posted should further information become available.
