Country-Americana-emo contortionists Home Is Where have announced a new album called Hunting Season which is due for release on 23 May via Wax Bodega.
The quartet have also shared the lead single “migration patterns”, with vocalist Brea MacDonald saying: “This is about grappling with a mundane destiny. You will work until the day you die.”
“migration patterns” kicks off with chugging guitars whose serrated edge has somewhat dulled through overwork, but still retain sharpness, while a wheezing but indefatigable mouth organ pumps away over the top. If that wasn’t clue enough that Home Is Where are back, then MacDonald’s opening lines will leaves you in no doubt: “The animals all crawl under my house to die”. From there, she and her bandmates yolk together a raggedly glorious paean to the life of your average American Joe, working his ass off day to day until they reach their inevitable grave. Hell, there’s plenty of fun to be had along the way though – especially in the glorious pedal steel, ripsaw guitars, an infectious “ba-da-ya” chorus and MacDonald’s yowling at the unfairness of life’s tiring predictability. Yeehaw.
