Hannah Cohen‘s latest single, “Draggin'”, envisions a more psychedelically-tinged version of Dusty Springfield or Minnie Ripperton. There’s a kaleidoscopic twang to its impulses, a chugging determination in its movements. Taken from her upcoming album, Earthstar Mountain, the song allows her to examine the occasionally ridiculous interactions that occur within the wild confines of familial relationships. Its churning folk-rock framework is built around her inimitable voice, a vehicle for histories and fictions drawn from her time wandering through her beloved Catskills. Her desire to expand the borders of her rhythmic experiences through a deeply felt sense of musical curiosity is on full display here.
Of “Draggin'”, Cohen explains: “There is a universal truth: water is wet, the sun rises in the east and your family will drive you to your brink.”
