No, it’s not the Northern Lights. That glow in the night sky is the arrival of a new star from Iceland. Glóey (who wisely shortened their name from Glóey Eyjólfsdóttir) just released their debut single “Away” that’s quickly rising up several Fresh Finds playlists. It’s an LGBTQ+ love ballad that’s intimate and beautifully sung.
Gloey’s voice has a confidence and command that you seldom hear in a new artist. Listeners may hear parallels to other great singers like American treasure Sophia James. “Away” gets an A+ for believability because it starts with Glóey’s actual phone message to their partner before the melody takes flight.
“‘Away’ was born from a deeply personal moment,” says the artist “A spontaneous outpouring of emotion transformed into a sonic love letter, capturing the universal yet intimately queer experience of long-distance love. The single opens uniquely with a real voice note to their partner, blending spoken word with melodic vulnerability, enveloped in a gentle, warm production by Bomarz. Glóey’s father, Eyjó Jóhannsson, enriches the track with an expressive guitar solo, adding a powerful familial dimension to the piece.”
One spin of “Away” had me exclaiming, “falleg frumraun” – a beautiful debut.
