With just over two weeks to go until Floating Points releases his new album Cascade, he has shared another single from it called “Ocotillo”.
The new track is a step away from the dancefloor-ready tracks we’ve heard from the album such as “Key103” – at least to begin. “Ocotillo” emerges as a combination of Sam Shepherd’s clavichord (inherited from his great aunt) and harp from Miriam Adefris. The two instruments circle and entwine in a tickling, hypnotic manner that sounds like an audio flower in bloom. We could happily stay in this realm, and Shepherd ensures that the moment is not rushed, teasing out the delicacies of the two instruments for some minutes. However, he’s always looking ahead and subtly, gradually a low humming bass starts to emerge underneath and over the course of a couple of minutes starts to overtake the song, charging it up into its final form: a meaty, fast-paced electronic cyclone that seems to have appeared out of nowhere. It’s sort of miraculous.
“Ocotillo” is released alongside an ‘alive painting’ by Tokyo-based artist Akiko Nakayama. Check that out below or find the song on streamers.
Floating Points’ new album Cascade is out 13 September via Ninja Tune (pre-order/save). You can find Floating Points on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
