There has been a lot of news about EMI around here and the sometimes nonsensical things that they do. They state that “This is not an effort to compete with iTunes or Amazon”, but it sure seems to be an attempt to take away attention from them.
Most likely this is just a publicity stunt. However, if executed correctly it could be pretty interesting. It would also add to the growing list of direct-to-consumer business models. It is unknown where this music store will be hosted and it is likely that it will contain a mixture of free and paid content. Also, there is rumors that it will include a “discovery” function. However, this would simply be reinventing the wheel when Last.fm and Pandora have already implemented it.
We shall see what happens.
