Leave it to ELUCID to reorient our collective frames of mind just before we’re ready to say goodbye to 2024. With the surprise release of INTERFERENCE PATTERN (an album, a mixtape, a 41-minute single…who knows), he continues to shatter perceptions of hip-hop and create sounds that leave listeners dizzy and out of breath. This longform track is a morass of innovative musical ideologies, a mash-up of genres, and a continuation of his search for meaning in the craggy depths of his imagination.
There are distinct movements here, as if we are listening to a complete record without track delineations; it’s an avenue to let his mind flow uninterrupted from one thought to the next without pausing to reflect on the origins or intent of these sounds. Beats are garbled, samples are cut and stripped — genres are joined and then uncoupled without so much as a second glance. He is one of hip-hop most earnest provocateurs, ready to break down all traditions and adapt them to serve his own labyrinthine desires.
To embrace “INTERFERENCE PATTERN” is to immerse yourself fully in his psyche, to wander without restriction the vast acreage of his subconscious. Musical histories intertwine and disintegrate, revealing a new perspective in their unraveling. With each listen, new angles and contours are revealed, minutiae and secrets hurtling past our eyes and ears. It’s a spectacle, and I couldn’t think of a better way to close out the year than to lose yourself completely in the corridors of its ferocious structures and intelligence.
