California-based newcomer Dora Jar impressed with her debut single “Did I Get It Wrong?” earlier this year, and comes storming back today with a new one called “Multiply”. She has a unique way of seeing her songs, saying:
“I’m building a funhouse of songs. ‘Did I Get It Wrong?’ is the basement, full of my subconscious fears. ‘Multiply’ is a spiral staircase leading up to the rest of the house: excited and bursting into a brighter place.”
A song that keeps you on tenterhooks throughout, “Multiply” is further proof that Dora Jar is one to keep an ear on. At first it seems to be a simple acoustic-and-voice confessional, but just like the “spiral staircase” she described it to be, “Multiply” keeps ascending, twisting and surprising. She uses her dextrous voice to explore blossoming feelings for a new partner, leaping up to her graceful falsetto with such captivating control. As her cheekiness and excitement grows through the track, you can feel a potential energy growing in the atmosphere, and it finally explodes in pure glee with a well-earned blast of guitar. It’s the top of the spiral staircase, a patch of sunlight on a resplendent rooftop – and where Dora Jar may go next is limitless.
