Despite having released two EPs (along with a remix companion), Luna Shadows is very much still on the rise. Her brand of DIY dark pop drifts between the elusive and the irresistible, with her latest single, “The Nineties” serving the perfect example of her growing vision.
With an echoing beat that seems to emanate from somewhere distant, just out of sight that contrasts delightfully with her weary, near-whispered sing-song vocals, “The Nineties” proves an addictive concoction indeed.
To go along with its helping of video game samples, the track’s video consists of Luna herself venturing through a classic arcade-like environment, cycling through characters and ultimately doing battle with herself, serving up the song’s perfect punchline: “On a list of things that might kill me / you’re right behind quicksand and the 90’s.”
Speaking on the song, Shadows elaborates, “I wrote this song at a time when I was experiencing such debilitating bouts of hyper vigilance that the simple act of leaving my home felt frightening: everything everywhere was out to get me. So many things could go wrong in a day: car accidents, shark attacks, lightning strikes, drowning, losing loved ones… I go through periods where I pull every and any nearby fear into focus. The attempt to fit as many of these fears as possible into an upbeat production for “The Nineties” was a very deliberate act intended to help me view myself with a lighter heart, to take back some control, and to laugh in the face of my anxious habits.“
