Darkside – the trio featuring Nicolás Jaar, Dave Harrington and Tlacael Esparza – will release a new album called Nothing on 28 February through Matador.
The act’s third album following 2021’s Spiral, Nothing is said to have come about through a different method of creation – where previous albums were born of fragments brought to the studio, the songs here were discovered through “spontaneous elliptical jams, acoustic riffing, and digital levitations” according to a press release.
While guitar grooves have always been a key facet of Darkside’s music, they seem to have come to the fore even more on their new material. We heard it in October’s single “Graucha Max” (which features on Nothing) and the newly release “S.N.C.”. Here, meatily plucked guitar strings intertwine and morph through different sonic dimensions, with Esparza’s simplistic but dynamic drumming holding it all together. Jaar’s words start mystical and despondent – “I know that your clouded thoughts, give you no peace or rest”, but later, his modulated voice shifts towards something euphoric – “I did it for the rush / I did it for the time of my life”. Meanwhile, a clavinet adds swagger to the piece, augmenting this shapeshifting, hypnotic marvel.
