Under the mantle of Cocorosie, sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady have never shied away from recognizing and addressing the various traumas that people often face everyday. They fight against the stigma of silent acceptance, opting for radical illumination of topics that might make some people uncomfortable or that point to inequities in our current social structures. Their latest single, “Yesterday”, is a harsh reflection of sexual violence and its impact on familial relationships. Taken from their forthcoming album, Little Death Wishes, the track couches this story of intimate assault and generational fallout in a propulsive pop song that never lets you look away from the terrible moments and consequences it depicts. It’s an insidiously catchy tune that forces us to reckon with the damage we’re witnessing while also offering refuge for those who find themselves on the receiving end of this kind of abuse.
“‘Yesterday’ is a nostalgic sunshine scene of the crude reality of broken families,” the band explains. “We hear it as backyard-BBQ music, setting a place for every misfit family member at the table.“
