Over the years, Cate Le Bon has developed a musical dialect few can decipher with any appropriate understanding — it’s filled with muted revelations and complex emotional stales, the kind of language that seems simple on the surface but is composed of galaxies of unspoken intent and catharsis. Her upcoming album, Michelangelo Dying, finds her continuing to refine this dialogue with her listeners, evolving a longstanding conversation that touches on all aspects of her life and the encyclopedic imagination which fuels her desire to create.
On her latest single, “About Time”, Le Bon wrestles with the expectations she has with the relationships in her life, digging deep into the roots of those emotional prospects in an effort to find a suitable path forward. Her needs and the anticipatory feelings that litter her everyday life aren’t incomprehensible and are bothy universal in their relatability and acutely personal when seen through the lens of her own existence. The music is a blend of propulsive synth thumps and ambient drones, repeating until she discovers the source of their power, her voice the key to unlocking the song’s true resonance. It’s a gentle wonder, one that doesn’t insist upon itself but gives us the room to approach at our own pace before revealing the grand design that she’s stitched together for our benefit.
