Dan Snaith aka Caribou has delivered another dancefloor-forward single, following up April’s “Honey” with the undeniable “Broke My Heart”. On this one, Snaith says:
“i always find it hard to believe those ‘it came to me in a dream’ stories about songs arriving fully formed… but this one was pretty close to that, which is not how it usually goes for me. i sat down at a piano one day and the string riff was just there at my fingertips and the vocal melody followed right behind it. i wish they all happened like that.”
A high-BPM blast, “Broke My Heart” utilises pitch-shifted samples of the titular phrase to hook you in – but then the vocalist overturns that pain into an insouciant and delectable verse that jumps around the energetic production. The attitude is elevated by Snaith’s classic but invigorating production, with everything culminating in a loopy and head-spinning wordless hook that will have crowds pogoing.
