Billy Lockett urges self-acceptance on “Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself”

One of the most disturbing trends in recent years is the way that social media fuels self-judging. UK artist Billy Lockett has penned the most eloquent answer to that problem in his uplifting new single โ€œDonโ€™t Be So Hard On Yourselfโ€, a highlight from his debut album Abington Grove, which is out today.

The haunting pre-chorus builds to the simple-yet-powerful solution in the chorus: โ€œYou canโ€™t forget the places youโ€™ve been / and you canโ€™t forget the fire you bring / and you canโ€™t forget the little voice in your head saying / โ€˜Donโ€™t be so hard on yourselfโ€™.โ€

โ€œI worry about everything all of the time,โ€ says Lockett. โ€œAm I eating too much? Am I smoking too much? I think thatโ€™s why I was a drug addict for so long; it just numbed it. When I got sober, I realized, โ€˜Shit, I do worry all of the time. Thatโ€™s an issueโ€™. Now, I can address it and see it with a clear head. I kept going back to the phrase, โ€˜Donโ€™t be so hard on yourselfโ€™. Everything will be okay. My girlfriend has a lot to do with it. Sheโ€™s the polar opposite. She doesnโ€™t worry about anything ever. So, itโ€™s a message to stop being a worrier.โ€

Lockettโ€™s new single is just one of many great tracks on his debut LP Abington Grove. โ€œNot Okayโ€ is Lockettโ€™s favorite song in the collection. โ€œItโ€™s a desperation song. Itโ€™s being honest, opening up, and saying things are actually really bad. Youโ€™re confessing,ย โ€˜God, I need youโ€™. Sonically, the vocals sound very percussive, which Iโ€™ve always loved about guys like Ed Sheeran and Post Malone.โ€

For the millions of people worldwide who are tangled up in social media-fueled self-condemnation, Lockettโ€™s new album is a godsend.
