A group of frustrated music fans have banded together in an attempt to find others like them who have been consistently disappointed with Weezer’s recent output in an attempt to raise $10 million to pay the band to retire.
Speaking to the The Stranger in Seattle, creator James Burns claimed that despite not actually being a Weezer fan he’d like to see the band break up because each new album is a “pile of crap” and he doesn’t like to see his “brothers and sisters” in the Weezer fan community being consistently disappointed.
Burns’ pitch reads as follows:
Every year, Rivers Cuomo swears that he’s changed, and that their new album is the best thing that he’s done since “Pinkerton,” and what happens? Another pile of crap like “Beverly Hills” or “I’m Your Daddy.”
This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now.
I am tired of my friends being disappointed year after year.I am tired of endless whimsical cutesy album covers and music videos.
I’m sick of hearing about whatever this terrible (and yes, even if you like the early stuff, you should be able to admit that they are wretched now) excuse for a band is up to these days.
If all 852,000 of you (really?) who bought “Pinkerton” pitch in $12, we will meet our goal.
I beg you, Weezer. Take our money and disappear.
At the moment the campaign is a long way from its target with only $273 and let’s hope it doesn’t get much further. This seems to be a hate-filled campaign determined to prove that Cuomo and co. are still in the music business only for the money.
Thankfully that is not true, it seems the band seem to be able to laugh about this just like the rest of us. Posting on his twitter, drummer Patrick Wilson joked that “If they make it 20 we’ll do the “Deluxe Breakup”.”
