Converge examine loss and our need to mourn on “We Were Never the Same”

The noise that vocalist-lyricist Jacob Bannon, guitarist-producer Kurt Ballou, bassist-vocalist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller create on each Converge record can be measured on the Richter scale. It throws you off balance, forcing you to adapt to its amplitude and collateral damage – and they’ve been doing this for over 30 years at this point. And they’ll continue to disrupt our equilibrium when they release their latest album, Love Is Not Enough, on February 13.

We’ve already heard the title track, and now the band offers another glimpse into their tectonic movements with “We Were Never the Same”, a melodic morass of howled vocals and apoplectic percussion. The guitars rain down fire with each riff, scorching the landscape as the track rolls along its path, its mountainous weight cracking the ground underneath.

I wrote these words in the parking lot of a funeral home while reflecting on loss,” explains Bannon. “Why do we gather to mourn but not to cherish? It’s an honest question that exposes our collective distractions and shortcomings. Grief brings clarity— We all must do better.
