Looms reflect on a fading friendship in “Happy Birthday”

Brooklyn-based indie rock quintet Looms are back with their first new music in two years. The band have been compared to The War On Drugs and Wilco (and have collaborated with the latter). The new single “Happy Birthday” is far from festive. It’s about a friend who regrettably drifted away from frontman Sharif Mekawy.

A few years ago, I had a very close friend that started to drift away,” says Mekawy. “I was desperate not to lose them and tried relentlessly to save the friendship to no avail. On the eve of their birthday, I was walking home thinking about how much I’d like to talk to them, and the words just came line by line very quickly. I finished the song that night, and sent it to them, but never got a response.”

Looms’ previous single “The Iron and the Rust” is a more welcoming song, with its inventive melody and expressive guitar work.

“Happy Birthday” is Looms’ first release since joining Paper Garden Records – and their next EP Big Dream arrives September 19.
